In the early 1950s, entrepreneur Lee Ratner, through his Lehigh Corporation, set out to transform the Lucky Lee Ranch into one of Florida's first mass-marketed residential communities, selling thousands of lots to buyers across the country. The name combined Lee County with the Lehigh Corporation. That large-scale platting left a distinctive legacy: a community laid out on an enormous grid of streets, canals, and residential lots that has taken decades to fill in — a process that continues today. The community's defining physical feature is its canal network, roughly 175 miles of waterways that thread through neighborhoods, some of which are frequented by manatees.
