Humacao is a city and municipality on the east coast of Puerto Rico, between the Caribbean Sea and the island's eastern interior. Known as "La Perla del Oriente" — the Pearl of the East — it is one of the larger and more established municipalities of Puerto Rico's eastern coastal plain, spread across a dozen barrios that range from the urban center to coastal and rural districts. The municipality's formal history dates to 1793, when Humacao was established as a municipality, later gaining villa and then city status as its population and administrative role grew. The area's roots reach back earlier, into the island's Taíno past, and its name preserves that indigenous heritage. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, Humacao developed as a commercial and administrative center for the eastern region, with a hospital, theater, and civic institutions serving the surrounding communities. Today Humacao is best known for two things: its role as a regional education and government center, anchored by the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao, and its coastline, which includes one of the island's most significant resort communities. Palmas del Mar, Puerto Rico's largest resort, occupies about 2,750 acres at the municipality's southeast corner, with two 18-hole golf courses, extensive tennis facilities, a beach club, a hotel, and miles of Caribbean frontage in a gated setting. Beyond the resort, Humacao offers public beaches, nature reserves, and protected wetlands along its coast, together with the everyday commerce of a working municipality. Its position places the San Juan metro and the island's central corridor within driving distance along Puerto Rico's eastern road network.
