Tamarac is a residential city in northwest Broward County, Florida, situated roughly 12 miles northwest of downtown Fort Lauderdale and part of the broader Miami metropolitan area. The community began in the early 1960s when developer Kenneth Behring laid out the first neighborhood, Tamarac Lakes, with one- and two-bedroom homes arranged around a shared clubhouse. The model proved popular, and Tamarac incorporated as a city on July 19, 1963. That clubhouse-centered, maintenance-oriented design still shapes the city's identity today. Over the decades Tamarac evolved from its origins as a retirement destination into a more diverse, family-friendly suburb. The city's population has grown steadily, reaching 71,897 in the 2020 census, with the city's own estimates now placing the total above 74,000.
