Sewall's Point is a town that occupies a narrow peninsula of the same name in Martin County, on Florida's Treasure Coast. The peninsula is bounded by water on three sides: the St. Lucie River runs along its southern and western shorelines, and the Indian River Lagoon lies to the east. That geography gives the town an unusually high share of waterfront property and shapes its identity as a quiet, low-density residential community. The peninsula is named for Captain Henry Edwin Sewall, a pioneer and developer who settled at its tip in the late 1800s. Sewall's original home, built in 1889, still stands as a historic structure now located in a county park across the water in Jensen Beach. The area remained sparsely developed for much of the twentieth century, and the town was not incorporated until 1957. Today Sewall's Point is known as one of the more affluent and strictly residential municipalities in Martin County. Commercial development is minimal, and the town has deliberately maintained a low-density, heavily landscaped character rather than following the faster growth of nearby Stuart. The 2020 census recorded a population of 1,991. Most homes are single-family residences on larger lots, many with direct access to the river or lagoon. The town's location places it close to the services, restaurants, and cultural life of downtown Stuart while keeping a quieter, more private atmosphere within its own boundaries. Hurricane activity has occasionally touched the area, most notably in 2004 when Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne made landfall near the Martin County coast, but the community has remained in place and continues to be prized for its waterfront setting and small-town governance.
