Pequannock Township is a suburban township in north-central Morris County, New Jersey, about 20 miles west of New York City. One of Morris County's oldest municipalities, it was incorporated in 1740 and takes its name — pronounced pa-QUAN-nick — from a Lenape term for the area. The township today encompasses two main unincorporated communities, Pequannock and Pompton Plains, and has a population of about 15,600. The Pompton River forms part of the township's eastern boundary, and its valley has long shaped settlement and transportation here. The river once powered early mills and farms, and its corridor remains a defining natural feature of the township. State Route 23, a major north-south highway, runs through the township and crosses the Pompton River at the Wayne border, while Interstate 287 clips the township's northwest corner with a full interchange just north in Riverdale. This positioning gives residents convenient access to the region's highway network and a direct route toward employment centers in northern New Jersey and New York. Pequannock Township is governed under a council-manager form of government and is known for its well-established, largely single-family neighborhoods, a strong school system, and active municipal recreation programming. The Pequannock Township School District serves students from the township, with its campuses centered in Pompton Plains. The township offers a blend of small-town suburban living and commuter practicality. Its roots as a colonial-era farming community are still visible in its older homes and mature streetscapes, layered with mid-century and newer residential development.
