Madeira Beach is a small city in Pinellas County, on the central Gulf Coast of Florida, occupying part of a narrow barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay, across the water from St. Petersburg. It was incorporated as a town in 1947 and later became a city, and it remains one of the most compact municipalities on the Pinellas beaches — roughly two miles long and a little more than a mile wide. The city is best known for John's Pass Village & Boardwalk, a waterfront entertainment district at the John's Pass inlet on the Intracoastal Waterway. What began as a working fishing village is now a boardwalk of seafood restaurants, shops, and charter-boat operations, and it remains a departure point for deep-sea fishing, dolphin cruises, and sightseeing excursions. The Suncoast Beach Trolley runs the length of the beach communities, and the Tom Stuart Causeway connects the island to the mainland. Downtown St. Petersburg is about 15 minutes east, and Tampa International Airport is within about a 40-minute drive, making Madeira Beach both a beach retreat and a practical coastal home base.
