Treasure Coast Coastal Enclave
Rentals in Hobe Sound, FL
Welcome to Hobe Sound, an unincorporated Treasure Coast community in Martin County framed by Atlantic beaches, the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, and Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
Hobe Sound is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in southern Martin County, Florida, along the Treasure Coast roughly midway between Stuart to the north and Jupiter to the south. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River Lagoon to the east and Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike to the west, it occupies a narrow coastal strip known for its beaches, natural preserves, and deliberately low-key, old-Florida character. The community's defining feature is its natural setting. The Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, established on land donated by the Reed family in the late 1960s, protects more than 1,000 acres on both sides of the Indian River Lagoon and provides nesting habitat for sea turtles and the endangered Florida scrub-jay. Immediately to the north, Jonathan Dickinson State Park preserves one of the region's largest tracts of pine flatwoods, sand pine scrub, mangroves, and river swamp along the Loxahatchee River. These public lands give Hobe Sound an unusually rural, nature-centered atmosphere for a coastal South Florida community. The residential character is a mix of modest older Florida neighborhoods, gated communities such as The Medalist, Loblolly, and Heritage Ridge, and, immediately to the east across the Intracoastal Waterway, the exclusive barrier island of Jupiter Island. The population is relatively small, with a median age around the mid-50s that reflects a substantial share of retirees and seasonal residents, alongside working families and commuters. Daily life in Hobe Sound is quieter than in neighboring Jupiter, which offers more concentrated shopping, dining, and entertainment a short drive south. Most employment is in retail, services, and nearby Stuart and Jupiter, with U.S. Route 1 and Interstate 95 forming the principal commuting corridors. Hobe Sound appeals to those seeking proximity to the Atlantic, generous open space, and a slower coastal pace within reach of the amenities and airports of the broader Treasure Coast and Palm Beach County.
