Carnival Winter Quarters

Rentals in Gibsonton, FL

Welcome to Gibsonton, a Tampa Bay suburb on the Alafia River long known as the winter quarters of America's carnival community.

Gibsonton, widely known as Gibtown, is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida, on the south shore of Tampa Bay. It sits along the Alafia River at the point where the river meets the bay, with U.S. Route 41 running through its center and Interstate 75 passing just to the east, about fifteen miles south of downtown Tampa. The community was founded in 1884 by James Gibson Sr., who homesteaded 150 acres at the mouth of the Alafia, and it grew slowly for decades as a river settlement tied to fishing, farming, and the region's strawberry and citrus economy. Gibsonton's most distinctive chapter began in the 1930s, when traveling carnival and circus performers began using the area as winter quarters. Drawn by the mild climate and the welcoming riverfront, show people — including some of the era's best-known sideshow performers — made Gibtown their off-season home, earning the community a lasting reputation as a carnival capital and "Showtown USA." That heritage remains a defining part of local identity even as the carnival industry has changed, and it survives in local lore, businesses, and the community's nickname. Today Gibsonton is in the midst of a different transformation, as Tampa's suburban growth has pushed south along U.S. 41 and I-75. Its population reached about 18,500 in the 2020 census, more than double its 2000 level, and new subdivisions now rise alongside older river homes and manufactured-housing communities. Students attend Hillsborough County Public Schools, with Gibsonton Elementary in the community. For buyers, Gibsonton offers river and bay proximity, easy access to Tampa, and a growing south-shore setting between Riverview, Apollo Beach, and Ruskin — all carrying a colorful, one-of-a-kind local backstory.
