    Arthur Kill Waterfront Borough

    About Carteret, NJ

Welcome to Carteret, a Middlesex County borough on the Arthur Kill across from Staten Island, with a working waterfront and direct Turnpike access.

Carteret is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, in the northeastern part of the state directly across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island, New York City. The Arthur Kill forms its eastern boundary, the Rahway River marks its northern edge at Linden, and Woodbridge Township borders the borough on its remaining sides. This position has defined Carteret's identity for more than a century. The borough was incorporated in 1906 and took the name Carteret in 1922, honoring Sir George Carteret, one of the original proprietors of the colony of New Jersey, and his son Philip, the colony's first royal governor. The community grew as an industrial and port center, with oil terminals, chemical plants, and related facilities clustering along the Arthur Kill waterfront — a legacy still visible in the area's tank farms and marine operations. Today Carteret is home to roughly 25,000 residents, a diverse population drawn to its affordability and its location within the New York metropolitan region. The borough sits at New Jersey Turnpike Exit 12, about fourteen miles south of Port Newark-Elizabeth, and the Goethals Bridge provides direct road access to Staten Island and Brooklyn. Joseph Medwick Park, named for the Hall of Fame baseball player from Carteret, offers riverfront recreation along the Rahway River. For homebuyers, Carteret offers established borough housing, a strong sense of community, and exceptional access to the region's highways, ports, and employment centers. Its schools, churches, and civic life anchor a community that has retained its working-class character even as the wider region has grown around it.

    City Guide

    About Carteret

    Real Estate & Housing

Carteret's housing is dominated by older, established single-family homes and two-family houses on compact borough lots, reflecting the community's early-twentieth-century growth as an industrial town. The stock is denser and more modest than the surrounding suburbs, with many well-maintained homes from the mid-twentieth century and earlier. The borough's proximity to the Turnpike, Port Newark-Elizabeth, and New York City has long made it a practical choice for commuters and working families seeking value and convenience in Middlesex County.

    Neighborhoods

Carteret is organized into several distinct sections that reflect its growth as a waterfront borough. Localities such as Chrome, West Carteret, Silvan Beach, South Carteret, and East Rahway carry the names of the borough's historical corners, several tied to its industrial and rail past. The Arthur Kill shoreline and the Rahway River frame the community's edges, while Woodbridge Township surrounds it on the land side. The result is a compact, layered borough with a mix of residential streets, industrial corridors, and riverfront areas.

    Lifestyle in Carteret

Carteret's character is shaped by its working waterfront and its deep roots as a port and industrial town. The borough is diverse and close-knit, with strong neighborhood identity, active churches and civic organizations, and a blue-collar heritage that remains part of local pride. Its position across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island and on the Turnpike keeps New York City and the region's ports and employment centers within easy reach. Residents enjoy a dense, walkable borough setting with riverfront green space and the amenities of nearby Woodbridge, Rahway, and Perth Amboy close at hand.

    Schools & Education

Carteret is served by the Carteret School District, which operates Carteret High School, Carteret Junior High School, and several elementary schools within the borough. St. Joseph School, affiliated with St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, provides private education for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade under the Diocese of Metuchen, and Yeshiva Gedola of Carteret is a private rabbinical college located in town. The district's long Thanksgiving Day football rivalry with Perth Amboy High School, dating to 1927, reflects the community's deep school spirit.

    Getting Around

Carteret sits at New Jersey Turnpike Exit 12, placing it roughly fourteen miles south of Port Newark-Elizabeth and directly on one of the region's primary freight and commuter corridors. The Goethals Bridge, reached via nearby exits, connects the borough to Staten Island and the Interstate 278 network into Brooklyn. Rail freight and marine terminals line the Arthur Kill waterfront, and the borough's highways offer straightforward access to Newark Liberty International Airport, the Port of New York and New Jersey, and the broader metropolitan region.

    Parks & Recreation

Joseph Medwick Park, along the Rahway River at the borough's northern edge, provides Carteret with riverfront green space, sports fields, and walking areas. The Arthur Kill waterfront, long dominated by industry, is complemented by parks and open spaces within the borough and in neighboring Woodbridge and Rahway. Residents can reach the full range of regional recreation — from Staten Island's parks to the Jersey Shore — within a short drive, while the Turnpike and Goethals Bridge open up access to New York City's cultural and recreational amenities.
